This test project aims to:
Create descriptions for works that are unlikely to be made accessible otherwise, with a special emphasis on showing emerging artists.
Engage artists in the process of developing verbal descriptions/accessible content for their work, and providing them with descriptions that can be adapted or used again in their personal websites or IRL shows.
Stretch accessible content by actively seeking work that is challenging to describe based on its media, methods, or content.
Promote discussion and bolster community around description for visual art online, where conversations and criticism can serve as a resource to those who wish to improve accessibility on artists’ websites and across blogging platforms.
Serve as a forum that can help artists and writers improve their accessible practices by starting a free archive of verbal descriptions.
Shift the expectation that accessibility in the arts is the responsibility of museums and large cultural institutions, and advocate for equitable cultural access in self-sustaining arts communities that function with little or no institutional support.
This mission is evolving.
